Coming up this Spring at l’appartement 49C

Hello from l’appartement 49C!

Spring has finally arrived in earnest, bringing with it that particular restlessness that comes when the city sheds its winter shell and suddenly everything feels awake again. We’ve been watching how the changing light transforms the work still hanging from our previous exhibitions, how afternoon sun catches details that the winter’s grey had kept hidden.

Thank you to everyone who attended our stamp making workshops earlier this month, the energy was incredible and the vibes were immaculate, watching strangers become absorbed in the meditative act of carving, how conversations flows differently when hands are busy, it revealed something essential about the way of seeing. We’re still thinking about everyone’s tiny universe come to life through hand carved stamps. Anyways, enough about the past lets jump in to whats coming up!

Fragments in Our Home: Exhibition opening May 10th

Join us for the opening of Fragments in Our Home on May 10th a group exhibition that examines domestic space as a living collage. Woven from transient experiences, personal rituals, and the physical objects that shape our sense of place. The exhibition explores how "home" manifests as an assemblage of fragments: tangible items, fleeting moments, and overlooked details that, through their juxtaposition and arrangement, collectively create meaning. Featuring the work of Kieren Jeane, Linda LaBella, Keerim Kim, Kelly Han, Ianthe Jackson, Aude Verbrugge, and more…

Intimate Wine & Dine Preview: A Sensory Prelude with Chef Janessa

Join us the night of May 9th, before the opening of Fragments in Our Home, for an intimate sensory experience curated by chef Janessa Wong, ahead of her restaurant M118 opening in Toronto next year. Rather than simply serving food alongside art, Janessa has created dishes directly inspired by the works on view. Flavours that deliberately trigger memory and textures that echo the familiar strangeness of home.

The evening explores whether taste can function as art criticism, whther the act of eating together might be another form of looking closely. Spaces are intentionally limited to maintain the intimate character essential to this kind of experimental dining.

Community Spotlight: Dream Junk & Cosmic Dust

Mallory Concetta Smith, whose collaborative work anchored our In TandemI exhibition, is part of a group show, Dream Junk & Cosmic Dust, running April 11th through May 4th. Swing by the opening reception April 17th, form 6-9pm.

Seeing Mallory’s work in a different context so soon after experiencing her collaborative practice here offers a chance to witness how an artist’s individual voice emerges from and speaks back to their partnership.

What’s Been Happening this Month

Stamp Workshop Day 1

Stamp Workshop Day 2

Earlier this April, we hosted two incredible stamp-making workshops. Watching participants transform from tentative sketches to first cuts to confident mark-markers reminded us why we’re drawn to hands-on making in an increasingly digital world. Each carved stamp became both tool and artwork. We see them as functional objects that carry their maker’s visual DNA, ready to multiply their particular way of seeing across surfaces yet to be discovered.

We hope to host more experimental gatherings for the months ahead. If you’re interested in collaborating on a workshop we could host in your space, whether that’s exploring a technique you’re passionate about or creating something entirely new together, please reach out!
